Time to Step Up

January 15, 2008

Joe Jacobs - SCR

With the new season just around the corner and the long winter bore fest over its time for the boys of NASCAR to crank up the engines and get ready for Daytona.

There are a lot of new faces in new places but I am concerned with the ones who have been in their current situation for a few seasons and have yet to live up to their owner’s expectation.

Ryan Newman did get back on track with his pole-winning prowess last season. That was a good thing for him. However he has been winless since 2005 and he has not made the Chase the past few seasons. Newman had a new crew chief last year that seemed to have helped a little but just not enough.

His teammate Kurt Busch has stepped up his game since being at Penske, Busch has won some races and made the Chase and in this day and age that is all that matters. Newman can say most of his problems came from Rusty Wallace (lack of communication etc.) but the fact of the matter is your not winning races. Its time to step up or move on and maybe it is time for Newman to move on.

Jamie McMurray has yet to live up to the win back in 2002 feeling in for Sterling Marlin. In 2005 he moved to Roush Fenway Racing and was expected to dominate the field. However he has only had one win and the rest has been less than stellar.

He seems to have issues either technical or not of his own making each and every week. Roush will not tolerate mediocre racing especially in this war he has with Toyota. If McMurray does not make the Chase or have a great season this year, expect him to be out and someone else in the 26 car in 2009.

Casey Mears’s move to Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) was a step in the right direction for his career; however, the pressure is on. He has two teammates (Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson) that are multiple time champions, and in 2008 NASCAR most popular Dale Earnhardt Jr. joins the mix at HMS.

On a positive note, Mears did win the Coca-Cola 600 last May but other than that he was in the shadow of his current teammates and Kyle Busch who was fired halfway through the 2007 season. Mears must step up and win a lot of races and make the Chase or he will be looking for a new job in 2009. There is no question he has the equipment to become a winner and can dominate in that equipment. The question is does he have the talent? I don’t believe he does but only time will tell, but one thing for sure is that he will be looking for a new job if he don’t step up his game.

These drivers have a fan base, have the look that the sponsors want, have the equipment to become great, but if they don’t step up they will be looking for work sooner rather than later.
