Impressive/Unimpressive: Paper Clip Racing

March 31, 2008

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Denny Hamlin: Another big win for Toyota. A great run for a driver who some people consider to be the number three man at Joe Gibbs Racing. If they keep up their momentum, you can expect see them in the Chase when September comes.

Jamie McMurray: One weekend doesn’t fix the years of horrible driving and bad luck but it’s a start. We will have to wait and see what will happen in the next few weeks. I would imagine he got a taste of what its like to be on the outside of the top 35 in owner points looking in and that might have lit a fire under him. But if it did not, Roush will find someone else for the No. 26 ride.

Matt Kenseth: Revenge is great… David Gilliland did a bonehead move and took Kenseth out. Kenseth returned the favor and got penalized for it. NASCAR should have given him points for finally showing some emotion.

Michael McDowell: First races are tough, First races at Martinsville can shake anyone’s confidence to the core. Finishing 25th after running on the lead lap all day is very impressive.

Hendrick Motorsports (HMS): All four HMS cars finished in the top ten Sunday and dominated most of the race. Everyone said they were dead in the water. Now we see what happens when everyone gets the same parts that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is getting.

Unimpressive:

Jack Roush: I know you hate Toyota… Hell everyone else knows it too. But I would not be so arrogant that your sway bars are so great that it would have made a difference if someone else had them. Maybe you should shut your mouth, let your drivers do the talking and keep your hatred of Toyota to yourself as it does not make you or your drivers look good. You should work on getting your champion Matt Kenseth running good again and resigning Greg Biffle to the No. 16 car before you lose both of them.

Matt Kenseth: He’s a great driver, a champion even. But since his crew chief Robbie Riser moved to team director there has been something I have not seen from him. Mr. “cool calm and collected” is now angry, panicky and sporadic. Losing Robbie Riser was probably the worst thing that ever could happen. All the Roush teams got a great leader, while Roush himself got someone he can trust to run the racing side of things, Kenseth seems to be the only one who lost out on that deal. Move on Matt, you can still win Championships.

Kyle Busch: There has been nothing unimpressive about this kid this year. But now two weeks in a row there has been trouble and that could potentially be a problem. Busch just needs to manage his emotions, take it easy and ride it out and get a few top fives or tens. If he can get that early season momentum back he could begin dominating. If he keeps keep’s sliding back he may never recover.
