Montoya… A Martinsville Man?

March 26, 2008

Martinsville, VA - Everybody must have thought the same thing about Juan Pablo Montoya (JPM) as a rookie on the Sprint/NEXTEL Cup Series tour last season. Nobody believed that Montoya would survive the short track season and especially the Martinsville Speedway unscathed in 2007. Well, everybody was dead wrong.

Not only did JPM complete the 500-lap Martinsville marathon in April, but he did so again in October, all 506 laps in the 21-caution flag filled event.

Montoya, who drives the No.42 Havoline Dodge Charger, did a solid job in April. Even with a late run-in with Tony Raines, Montoya never lost a lap and finished 16th in the Goody’s Cool Orange 500.

Surprisingly, the Chip Ganassi driver bettered himself in the October Subway 500. Montoya displayed an outstanding run and came away with a relatively clean eighth place finish.

There is one thing that catches the eye though about Montoya at Martinsville… he really races it. The Columbian managed both Martinsville races well, and wasn’t afraid to be aggressive, rub, bump and do all of the feats that make drivers good short track racers.

Maybe the old adage about road course aces making good short track racers is true.

Two weeks ago in Thunder Valley, Montoya had his best Bristol result, a 15th place finish two spots better than his 17th place finish in the fall of 2007.

This weekend might be a good time for the Martinsville Speedway to arise on the NASCAR schedule for JPM. He currently sits 19th in points and has no top fives or tops ten finishes this season.

The former Formula One star led nine laps in the October event and averaged a 12.0 place result at the paperclip in Virginia. With Montoya just 86 points out of the Chase cut off, you can certainly bet that the past Indy 500 winner’s fantasy stock is going up for this weekend at the Martinsville Speedway.
