Michael Waltrip Racing: Don’t
Put David Reutimann in the 44 Car!
March 18, 2008
Jay Staton - SCR
Dale Jarrett has run
his last Sprint Cup points earning race and, like his father before him, retired as an aggressive driver, a statesman for
the sport, and a Champion.
The plan has been—and
it was a good one—to let Jarrett run the first five races of 2008 and accumulate points with a Champion’s provisional
if necessary, and then have David Reutimann take over afterwards.
However, Reutimann
has qualified and raced his way into a solid 26th position in the Cup Standings, the highest position of the Michael Waltrip
Racing (MWR) fleet.
So, Mr. Waltrip, don’t put Mr. Reutimann into the 44 car, put the UPS sponsorship on the number 00 car!
The number 44 is certainly
not a number that UPS is affiliated with, if anything they were associated with the number 88 when Dale Jarrett was with Robert
Yates Racing. As anyone not in a coma is aware, 88 is now the mantra of the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Nation, and rightfully so.
But similarly, the number
00 is not just David Reutimann’s number, but his father Buzzie’s, and his grandfather’s before that.
In a happy twist of fate that
may not have been such a coincidence—after all good things do happen to good people all the time, Reutimann started
his Sprint Cup career with the family number 00, and, UPS executives, I can guarantee that there are three generations of hard core racing fans that regularly send
packages that would like to see him keep it.

That said, David Reutimann
fans will cheer him on in a Toyota,
a Chevy, IMCA dirt modified, or the big brown truck.
For you see, just as
true favor is gained in the heart of The One that loves us by our actions, and not our appearance, that same gift was passed
down to us, and regardless of the outcome of Waltrip’s decision, there is a quiet yet steadfast Reutimann nation that
will cheer David on regardless of the number on his door. Go 00!
