Impressive/Unimpressive: Atlanta

March 10, 2008

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Kyle Busch: It was a matter of time before Busch was going to find victory lane. He has dominated all year and it finally paid off. I am not sure what the deal was with Dale Jarrett on the last lap but that will be forgotten (well not by Jarrett). So on everyone’s score card that’s Kyle Busch -1 Dale Earnhardt Jr.- 0. It’s still early but if the 18 team keeps this pace up it’s going to be a long year for everyone.

Tony Stewart: A top two finish and first and second with your teammate and he’s not happy. I like his attitude, the tire stinks everyone was out of control. He has his opinion he likes to say it and he isn’t going to be nice about it. You can bet he will get the phone call from NASCAR to tell him to tone it down.

Brian Vickers: A great run for a team that needed it. The point’s situation is very clear for them and even if they miss the race next week they will be locked in. As the season goes on look for this team to make more noise and become a factor.

Bobby Labonte: Mr. Atlanta had a great run Sunday. It was not a win but considering his team and the equipment shortcomings at Petty Enterprises it was an almost win. If he did that well in that equipment imagine if he had something top notch.

Stock Car Racing Commission: They did the right thing by giving Robby Gordon his points back. I have issue with increasing the fine but the points are what matters the most. Their decision changes the entire outlook of a team and probably saved them from going out of business.

Unimpressive:

Jimmie Johnson: Two weeks in a row this two-time champion team had a sub par finish. And his Hendrick Motorsports teammates were in the top five. What’s the deal? Did Hendrick move the No. 48 team to the developmental shop, A.K.A the old 5 garage out back? It might not be time to panic but it might be time to start thinking about all the changes that happened at HMS but not with your team.

Goodyear: Leave the tire compound alone. I don’t know what they are thinking and I am not an engineer. But it would seem that if they would leave the compound alone the teams would adjust and the cars would be still as safe. Changing it time and time again does not help anyone and I am sure an argument could be made for safety issues.

Larry McReynolds: His job is to be a racing analysis not an opinion columnist. He is not supposed to defend anyone or anything during the race. That includes the tire and the tire company. I’m sure somewhere down the line your comment will net you some funding from Goodyear for your son’s team but leave the opinions to those who are not calling the race.
