The Off Season is Almost Over and the Daytona 500 Winner Will Be…

February 14, 2008

Jay Staton - SCR

Yes, the long wait for the 2008 Cup Season began in November and is just about over.

As they say in racing, there is no off season, and we have kept busy racing here on a weekly basis—with 1/64 scale slot cars. Do not chuckle too long, these little racers cover a four lane figure eight track constructed on a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood in 1.7 seconds, at a scale speed of over 300 mph. And trust me, the emotions run as hot as those of Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch when another driver sends your car out of the park, Lee Petty style.

Further evidence of the seriousness of this miniature racing was apparent in the infield of the recently run 24 Hours of Daytona when Greg Walker of “The Race Place” in Daytona Beach and Alan Smith of “Slot Car Illustrated” hosted their own event racing slot cars--for 24 hours straight! If you have an interest in this hobby feel free to get in touch via the link below and I will do my best to get you off to a running start.

But it is now the most exciting time of the year, time for the Sprint Cup’s biggest event, the Daytona 500!

And the winner will be (drum roll please…) DALE EARNHARDT JR!

Here is how I got there:

Dale Jr. is in a Hendrick car. Undisputedly the Hendrick cars were the Car of Tomorrow (COT) leaders last year, and as evidenced by Earnhardt’s win in the Bud Shootout and Jimmie Johnson’s pole effort, have lost nothing to the other Teams over the winter.

Earnhardt apparently has inherited his father’s ability to “see” the air. Put simply, when cars move through the air at 200mph, they create a “wake” in the air, much like a boat moving through the water. Earnhardt Jr. is among the best, if not the best at reading this invisible phenomenon.

Earnhardt has three teammates that are ready and willing to draft with him, and all three understand just how big it would be to have Junior pull off the biggest win of the year for Hendrick Motorsports. They will beat him if they can, but there will be no Rusty Wallace/Ryan Newman on track antics. Additionally, unlike a few others that will be taking the green flag, Earnhardt has many other drivers that will draft with him, notably Michael Waltrip and Tony Stewart.

Earnhardt also has Tony Eury Jr. as his crew chief, and that continuity blended with the level headedness of the Hendrick organization will be a bonus.

And finally, and most importantly, Dale Jr. has untied the sometimes tumultuous knot with his stepmother and has replaced unrest with the smoothness of racing for a truly good guy and father figure, Rick Hendrick.

Earnhardt now knows that he has a good car and not only a good owner behind him, but the security of someone that cares about him. Regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s race, Dale Jr. will be the big winner.

That same security is available to us all—to those that have good fathers, those whose fathers that are not so good, and to those that have none at all.

For the inherent goodness of Rick Hendrick is based in a Father that he looks up to, a Father that is there for us all, a Father that can sustain us for an afternoon’s trial or a long and grueling endurance event.

Remember to ask for a safe race for not only Dale Jr., but also the rest of the field, and join me in trying yet again to let go of the pain of the past—and like Dale Jr., to look forward to a bright and secure future in His Peace.
