Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Mediocre Driver with a Million Fans

November 26, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Well Thanksgiving has passed and so has the 2007 NASCAR season now we have that long wait until Daytona in February.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his legion of fans will be waiting impatiently for the 2008 season to begin and his days as driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

However I am one of the few who is not excited about Earnhardt Jr. driving for HMS in 2008.

I just don’t see what the big deal is about Earnhardt Jr. or why he has all those fans follow him no matter how bad he runs. With the way fans flock to him you would think he is a multiple champion in NASCAR’s top series and has 40 plus wins. But he doesn’t and he has failed to make the Chase a couple of times also.

His poor runs in 2007 could be because of his team’s mechanical issues? This year was a horrible year for the Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) engine package. Earnhardt Jr. blew up too many times to count. But I have to give him credit, when he did not blow up he was running up front most of the time.

Is he a great driver who just needs to mature or is the equipment at DEI just not that good? Well if has not matured by now he never will and before 2007 the DEI equipment was not that bad.

So the problem must then be is that he is just an average driver. He has won the Daytona 500, but so have Derrick Cope and Ward Burton. Jr. did win back-to-back Busch Series Championships but back in the late 90’s the Cup presence was not what it is today. Could he win a Busch Championship today, probably not?

On the bright side, going into the 2008 season Earnhardt Jr. has a few things in his corner. The biggest being a car owner (Rick Hendrick) who is hands on and will do what it takes to make his teams win. Hendrick does show up at a lot of the races and he has yet to pass off all responsibilities to someone with limited NASCAR experience.

There is no doubt that the Hendrick equipment is top notch and will not fail or falter. But I don’t know if Dale Jr. has enough raw talent to win a championship with even the best equipment. And yes he will have the best equipment money can buy, the same equipment that Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and their six championship’s will have next year.

The biggest mistake HMS made was bringing his cousin and crew chief Tony Eury Jr. to be his crew chief. Eury Jr. just does not seem to have the crew chief mentality. He is a fiery hot head who does not know how to keep his driver calm and under control during a race.

With all of those things going for him next season (the exception being Eury Jr.) only time will tell if Earnhardt Jr. can step up to the next level or will he forever be mediocre driver with a million fans.
