Impressive/Unimpressive: The Championship Race

November 19, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Jimmie Johnson: Well he is the champion, and dominated the year; he did something that a lot of people including myself thought that was impossible. He won back-to-back championships in this day and age. Congrats to the whole 48 team.

Matt Kenseth: A nice dominating performance Sunday, very unusual for this team. It was a nice way for Robbie Reiser to end his stint as Kenseth’s crew chief. I am not sure who the crew chief is going to be but I would be weary of changes like that. They are almost a lock to contend in 2008. I for one would not be surprised to see them back in the Chase next year.

Martin Truex Jr.: Another great run for the new face of Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI). If they can stop blowing motors I think they can really contend next year with a veteran like Mark Martin as a teammate and better equipment look for even more from Truex in 2008.

Dave Blaney: He pretty much carried Toyota this year, and today finished with a respectable top 15. It was a tough season for the Toyota bunch but they gained something extremely valuable. They are guaranteed of making the Daytona 500 field in February with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) making the move to Toyota. That is three teams that can win right out the box so expect better things from Toyota in ‘08.

Unimpressive:

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: A miserable end to a miserable year, what more can be said? He looked like he did not have a single ounce of talent today when he crashed on pit road. I still don’t believe that he is better than Kyle Busch and only time will tell if he can win a championship with Hendrick Motorsports (HMS). I know the fans love him because of his name but talent wise he is on the level with Casey Mears, Reed Sorenson, and Jamie McMurray. He needs to win a lot of races and a championship soon to become an elite driver in NASCAR’s top series.

Richard Childress Racing (RCR): Clint Bowyer carried this team during the Chase; the rest of RCR (Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick) floundered at best. They came in to it with a little bit of momentum but ran mediocre down the Chase. Not quite sure what the problem is but time-and-time again RCR proves that when the season is winding down they just do not have what it takes to be champions.

ESPN: They keep it consistent during their segment of races… They were horrible. How does Rusty Wallace keep his job? It is a good thing that the Daytona 500 is on. Boogity Boogity Boogity….UGH… well maybe not!

On a personal note, I want to wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving.
