Talladega: The Good, The Bad, and The Boring

October 8, 2007

The Car of Tomorrow (COT) made its Superspeedway debut Sunday at the Talladega Superspeedway, where we saw some action not typical of Talladega… The Good, The Bad and The Boring.

The Good:

Jeff Gordon: Gordon won for the sixth time at Talladega and scored his 12th career restrictor plate (RP) win. And to top it off, with this win he also overtook his teammate, Jimmie Johnson, to take the points lead, even if it only by 6 points.

Dave Blaney: Blaney scored a third place finish at Talladega, something that not only he needed, but also his manufacturer, Toyota, and his team, Bill Davis Racing, needed.

Michael Waltrip: Even though he did not have the finish he would have liked (25th), he still won the pole and all three Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) cars made the race.

Jacques Villeneuve: With all the critics saying he should not make his debut at Talladega, he stayed out of the big one and did not cause any major problems. On top of it all, he finished 21st, the second best among Toyota drivers.

Tony Raines: A top 10 at Talladega, all while auditioning for a 2008 ride.

The Bad:

Bobby Labonte: Labonte had one of the best days going for him in recent memory; only to see it go away with one hard left turn. Even though Labonte does not know what happened, he made a hard left while running near the front of the pack and was the cause of the “BIG ONE” at Talladega. This is not something that a former series champion should never have happen without having a reason why?

Jeff Burton: Engine problems and a 43rd place finish, and now he sits 12th in the Chase standings 331 points behind leader Jeff Gordon

Dale Earnhardt Inc (DEI): Two more blown engines and a 40th and 42nd place finishes for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr. No matter how much Earnhardt tries to sound upbeat about the rest of the season at DEI, you know he wishes he could get out now. It would not be surprising if Truex was wishing he could follow.

The Boring:

The Car of Tomorrow at Talladega and NASCAR: For some reason Sunday’s race reminded me of Daytona 2000. The reason being for the first 130 laps Sunday at Talladega; the cars played follow the leader, just like at Daytona in 2000.

Maybe next time NASCAR will let the teams work on there cars after qualifying; instead of impounding cars that so few know so little about on such a large track.

The car is supposed to be safer, but when those in control don’t think things through well; lets just say they are lucky that the drivers were smart enough to play follow the leader for safety’s sake, even though it did recreate Daytona 2000.
