Impressive/Unimpressive: Chase Race 1

September 17, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Clint Bowyer: Winning the first race is always the best win, but to totally dominate the day and silence the critics about not winning any races and making it into the Chase. Not sure if he can keep up the momentum but the win is nice no matter when it is.

The 43-car field: The first time in modern history all 43 cars were running at the end of the race… that’s impressive. That Car of tomorrow is tough…. Probably a little too tough.

JJ Yeley: A nice top ten run today, quietly but surely he finished 10th. He has also announced a new ride next year (Hall of Fame Racing), not sure if it’s a good move but it will keep him paired with the Joe Gibbs Racing.

Unimpressive:

Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton: While their teammate was dominating the race, these two just ran in the back of the pack all day, not of their own doing but being that far out this early will be hard to over come.

ABC/ESPN: The coverage was so bad today that I turned it off and listened to the radio. Missing the restarts was absolutely awful especially in a race as big as the first Chase race. Next week maybe you guys can go to commercial right as the green flag flies or on the last lap. The mistakes made during the race with announcers calling wrong names and car numbers is horrible and this far into the season makes it just horrendous.

NASCAR: Because I just know they are going to change the Chase again in 2008. You have something that works great Jeff Gordon lost his big lead but Dale Earnhardt Jr. did not make the Chase again, and NASCAR thinks that just because this format hurts their two biggest stars that they must change it. I think not, it should still be ten cars in the chase and it still should be even points all around.

Yates Racing: Selling the number 88 is one thing, but bringing back the No. 28 and having to look for two sponsors next season is going to be a tall task. But let’s give credit where credit is due. You did find a way to skirt the rules… sort of. With the so called merger with Jack Roush is going to help you find sponsors.

Toyota: No Toyota driver finished in the top 25 Sunday, the highest finisher being David Reutimann in 26th. You can bet they are counting down the days until the 2008 season starts. That’s when Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) comes into the mix. Maybe then Toyota will know what victory lane looks like.
