Bayne Likes DEI, But Unfinished Business is Left in Pro Cup

Bristol, TN - Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI) knew that they saw something in a 16-year-old youngster last season while he raced in the Hooters Pro Cup Series and Trevor Bayne isn’t complaining about it.

It has been a season of transition for the Rocky Top native. The Knoxville, TN driver switched from Ford to Chevy after the 2006 season. Bayne was recognized at Bristol during the 2006 season and then again in 2007.

For almost two complete seasons racing in the Pro Cup Series, Bayne went winless, but at the midpoint of the ’07 season his fortunes changed as DEI signed him as a development driver. His fortunes changed even more so in the month of August, as Bayne was able to break through for his first win in the No.29 Team Chevrolet for T2 Motorsports at the legendary Hickory Motor Speedway.

“It was awesome to get that win. My team worked so hard and they built that car in just a little over nine days,” Bayne said. “We didn’t have to chase the track like everybody else and it just came to us in the race. After that, we took off with the lead and finally got the monkey off of our backs in getting that first win.”

Starting in 2008, it looks like Bayne won’t be racing in a lot of Pro Cup events as his career takes another path. DEI is looking at fielding a Busch Series East car for Bayne in 2008 and then possibly moving him up to the Busch Series in 2009.

If that is the case, Bayne can only do one thing and that is to soak in every opportunity that comes with the long term contract.

“I am just going to be a sponge to the facilities at DEI,” Bayne said. “They have a lot of knowledge and I need to take advantage of every situation that they provide me with. I am looking forward to a long future with Dale Earnhardt Incorporated.”

Bayne, who is testing with DEI in late August or early September, says that he is learning a lot from the Nextel Cup operation. For now though, he has a short term goal in which to achieve, a Hooters Pro Cup Championship. The first race of five starts this Saturday night at the Mansfield Motorsports Park and Bayne is feeling pretty good about his shot to add the championship trophy to his collection.

“The way we have been running, I really think we do a have a good chance for a Hooters Pro Cup Championship,” Bayne said.

The results speak for themselves. Three of Bayne’s last six finishes are top fives, including a third place effort in the final Southern Division event last week at Bristol.

“I am not going to count those chickens before they hatch, but my team deserves it (the championship) just as much as anyone else,” Bayne said. “My team doesn’t care what it takes; they want it as bad as I do, so we will just see how it turns out.”
