Impressive/Unimpressive: The Bristol Bore-Ring

August 27, 2007

Joe Jacobs – SCR

Impressive:

Edwards on Concrete: Carl Edwards dominance on concrete tracks continued last night at Bristol, too bad for Edwards that there is only one full concrete track in the Chase. They might contend in the Chase but they must step up their game further to beat Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Bobby Labonte: Two top tens in a row for him and Petty Enterprises since Doug Randolph took over as crew chief two races ago; they are really doing things right over there for a change. Not sure if the 43 is ready to contend for a win just yet, but if things fall their way they could steal a one.

Unimpressive:

This list was easy to come by the hardest part was trying to figure out where to begin because overall the drivers were not the problem as most raced a really clean race.

ESPN: I can not say it enough about the play-by-play announcing and what seems to be 50 personalities on any race broadcast. But during the closing laps of Friday nights Busch race something happen that never should happen due to human error.

With three laps to go the TV went black, NEVER should this happen, do satellites and computers crash… absolutely but someone pushing a button and causing the fans to miss the last three laps of an exciting race should never happen.

Bristol Motor Speedway: I hate clichés but the old adage if it ain't broke don’t fix it should have been applied here. That was probably the most boring Bristol race in the history of the speedway. I love progressive banking, but not at a short track. Bristol is one of the hardest tickets in all of sports to get. But I would venture a guess to say next year you can find tickets everywhere.

Goodyear: Hard tires are horrible; they do nothing for the racing but make sure that your tires don’t wear out. They take all the strategy out of racing and I am not sure if they are even safer than the softer compound. Get with the program Goodyear, before someone comes along and dethrones you.

Jimmie Johnson: Once again Johnson causes a crash and once again he did not take responsibility for his actions. On lap 226 he clearly hits rookie A. J. Allmendinger, which in turn takes out rookie Aric Almirola in the ensuing aftermath. It is never mentioned as besides Johnson it involved two rookies, go figure.

Hey Jimmie, everyone gets in to accidents but once in a while you could take a little responsibility for ones you clearly cause.

Rusty Wallace: Every time he makes a statement about how the car runs or about the aero dynamics it’s almost like it is coached and not his own information. Then when he does make the statement, Andy Petree has to come behind him and correct him without making Wallace look stupid. If ESPN wants a driver in the booth, get Kyle Petty, Wallace just does not cut it.
