Impressive/Unimpressive: The “Brickyard”

July 30, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Tony Stewart: Stewart dominates Indianapolis and wins his second straight race. The summer heats up and so does Stewart, quite typically. Now it is time to start wondering if he can keep his temper down and his momentum up, again typically.

Juan Pablo Montoya (JPM) - I have been critical of Montoya all season for his aggressive driving, but today he drove a clean race and had a second place finish to show for it. Now JPM if you can keep this up, you just might start making some fans.

Jason Leffler and Toyota:  Together they got the first win for Toyota and the second for Leffler in his career. The two been running fairly well all year and they finally broke through. Does this mean Toyota domination in the Busch Series? I don’t think they are ready for that but Toyota Racing development (TRD) has made a lot of steps in the right direction. Next Win… Nextel Cup?

12th in Points: The battle for 12th place in the points seems to be heating up; the next 6 races should be great. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has 12th currently but by only 13 points over Kurt Busch. Those penalty points will be HUGE come Richmond.

Unimpressive:

Jimmie Johnson: He had a worried look on his face after Chicago, and now after crashing two weeks in a row and falling to 9th in the points they are in panic mode. Where’s Chad Knaus when they need him most… at home on the radio?

SCR is looking for writers in all the series we cover, if interested email us at scr@stockcarreview.com to receive further information.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: For just hanging on to 12th in a lame duck year with his team. They want to win races and contend for the championship before Jr. moves to Hendrick Motorsports next year. But bad finishes, crashes and blown engines might keep Jr. out of the chase one more time.

Ginn Racing/ DEI merger: They are both doing what they must do to survive, however one is not sure if they have the people or equipment to contend even with the added support from both groups. Running four-cup teams from two different shops is going to be a challenge. Mark Martin is the only thing that keeps their chances of success alive.

Ryan Newman: Newman is on the borderline of moving in to the chase even though he has not won a race since 2005. His pole-winning rate and performance have only been mediocre at best the last few seasons. The question now has to be asked. Is it time for Newman to move on?
