Impressive/Unimpressive: The Pepsi 400

July 9, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Impressive:

Jamie McMurray: He wins by inches, as a matter of fact he had the closest finish in Daytona history and the second closest since NASCAR begin computerized timing and scoring in 1993.  It was after an impressive comeback from a penalty for going below the yellow line, a judgment call at best.

Kyle Busch:  Busch wins the early Busch race, and still manages to almost win two races in the same day.  Perhaps if he had a solid teammate backing he could have pulled off the double.

No Words for JPM:  It’s impressive that no one has had “words” with Juan Pablo Montoya (JPM) during or after a race.  This talented no talent has caused many problems and will continue to do so until someone puts him in his place.  Add JPM to Kevin Harvick’s hit list.

Wide Open Coverage:  The coverage was impressive, they had more commercials than expected, but over all it was good.  Fans did not miss anything that happened during the race.  However it was not revolutionary, ESPN asked to do the same thing with their Side-by-Side coverage; I guess they did not throw enough money at NASCAR to do so.

Unimpressive:

Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears:  The childish teammates at Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) Gordon, Johnson and Mears. By hanging out the best car HMS had on the track and possibly of the race (Kyle Busch).  Then Jeff Gordon did not even bother speaking to Busch, when he tried to congratulate Gordon on a good race.  That just shows his true colors.  That might come back to bite him because Busch is a loose cannon and if you want to play dirty; he will be more than obliged.  Besides your teammate coming next year has half the talent that Kyle Busch has.

Teammate Turmoil Part Two:  Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin had their first run in that we know of.  This he said/she said better be squashed on Monday because they need to work together if they want to beat the Hendrick Trio.  The video says a lot and then it says nothing, Stewart ran into the back of Hamlin, but Hamlin’s speed seemed to be off at the time of impact.  You make the call…

NASCAR:  Yes they seem to be a weekly fixture on the unimpressive list.   It’s ok for your title sponsor to change its name from Nextel to Sprint, Nextel and Sprint merged. And now Sprint is the new company name but not ok for other companies to do the same.

It almost sounds like the Cingular and AT&T merger, Cingular in now AT&T, the difference is NASCAR is playing by their rules and making some one else play by a different set of rules.

Qualifying:  NASCAR once again, I know that they have no control over the weather but there must be something that can be done about the points and another chance to qualify if it is rained out.  There was no reason why qualifying could not have been started over and ran Saturday afternoon.  Every opportunity should be made to get qualifying in.  Boris Said would have been on the pole but instead he was on the first plane back to Charlotte and the point’s leader, the driver who needs the help the least gets to sit on the pole.
