JPM the Real Deal?

April 17, 2007

Merv Casey - SCR

For months before the Daytona 500 it seemed like that all one heard about was that the great race car driver Juan Pablo Montoya (JPM) was coming to NASCAR.  Like most race enthusiasts I knew who JPM was and his accomplishments. But alas they were all in open wheel racing in those wispy little cars with built in jacks, on board computers, smart steering wheels, and almost everything carbon fiber or titanium, Cup cars now that is an entirely different deal. They have fenders, no computers, and for the most part race on tracks that require only a left turn.

So I thought this hot shot would come into Cup racing and be a total fish out of water. I figured that it would be fun watching the big boys show him exactly how the hogs ate the cabbage.

Well I guess we all know that didn’t happen, or at least it hasn’t happened yet.  So far this season he has shown the big boys a thing or two. Like in Sunday’s race, you know the one at Texas?  He showed “Smoke” (Tony Stewart) that he couldn’t be pushed around and we all got to see a spectacular 360 that pretty much ended the day for “Smoke.”  As far as having a decent finish “Smoke” ended up 25th and as a bonus he collected Jimmy Johnson in the process and they both finished way out of the money.

Be that as it may, JPM has a respectable average finish to date at 18.3 a low of 32nd at Bristol where at least he finished the race on the track and only a handful of laps down. His best finishes have a top five at Atlanta and an 8th at Texas.  We also shouldn’t forget that he won in the Busch race in Mexico. But in all this has he won any friends?  Somehow I don’t think so and maybe he still has to learn how the hogs eat the cabbage.

He stands thirteenth in the points ahead of some very good drivers including three past Cup Champions.  As for the rest of the season who knows?  He has made some pretty good drivers rather cross with him and we all know Pay Back can be a real bitch.
