Busch Wins First COT Race at Bristol

March 26, 2007

Kyle Busch won the Food City 500 Sunday at Bristol in dramatic fashion.  Taking the lead from Denny Hamlin with just 16 to go, Busch had to hold off both his teammate Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton, who both pitted for tires when the caution waved that same lap for Jimmie Johnson’s flat tire.

Busch, along with five other cars including Hamlin, stayed out, but a caution with two laps to go put Gordon and Burton on his bumper for the green-white-checkered restart.  Burton immediately got around Gordon, but pulled a classy move, refusing to bump Busch out of the way to take the win, settling for second.

Gordon’s third place finish, along with Mark Martin’s absence, vaulted him to first in the championship standings.  Kevin Harvick finished fourth.  Greg Biffle, who also stayed out on old tires, held on for fifth.

Jeff Green finished sixth.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. was seventh.  Clint Bowyer followed in eighth.  Jamie McMurray and Casey Mears got much needed top 10s, finishing ninth and 10th respectively.

However, the day was dominated by the two Joe Gibbs cars of Tony Stewart and Hamlin.  Stewart led 257 laps before a fuel pump problem on lap 288 put him out of contention.  He finished 35th.

Hamlin took over right where his teammate left off leading 177 laps before giving up the lead to Busch with 16 to go.  He suffered engine problems late in the race and limped home to a 14th place finish.
