Childress: Burton Not Going Anywhere

Nextel Cup News - Source: Scene Daily

Jeff Burton will not be on the market any time soon, even if the NASCAR/AT&T legal wrangling doesn't fall AT&T's way, car owner Richard Childress said Friday at Michigan International Speedway.

Burton signed a contract to drive for Richard Childress Racing in June, with AT&T signing on as sponsor. But that was before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned an injunction that had allowed AT&T logos on the No. 31 Chevrolet in place of Cingular signage.

"We've got contracts with AT&T and Jeff Burton," Childress said.

That means Burton isn't going anywhere, Childress indicated.

Childress did not want to comment on the NASCAR/AT&T situation "because it's still in the legal system," he said.

"We hope we can come to some kind of agreement we can all live with," Childress said.

Should there be further trouble for AT&T, it could affect RCR's plans for a fourth team in 2008, though Childress was confident the fourth team would go on as planned.

"It's something we'll probably have to take a harder look at," Childress said. "But we feel that team's pretty safe."

Childress confirmed his team had talked to representatives of J.J. Yeley, the driver who recently announced he would not return to Joe Gibbs Racing next year, about the possibility of driving for RCR.

"We've spoken to Yeley's people," Childress said. "He's someone that we definitely would very highly consider."

Oil City Cup Round 1 Winner... Steve Kinser

DIRT Motorsports WoO Sprint Series News

Edmonton, AB - Steve Kinser has won countless races in the United States . He also has won in Australia , as well as in the World of Outlaws lone race in Mexico in 1992. The one place he had not won, prior to the World of Outlaws inaugural visit to Castrol Raceway on Friday night, was in Canada . The 20-time World of Outlaws champion is the only driver that has competed in all six World of Outlaws events north of the border, dating back to 1979.

That all changed on Friday night, as he was victorious on the first night of the Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, leading all 35 laps from start-to-finish. The race was also the kick-off of the 2007 Gold Rush Tour for the World of Outlaws that will consist of 11 races at six tracks.

“It’s good to win once,” said Kinser, driver of the Q Oil Maxim. “It’s been a while since we won a race. It all turned out pretty well. Our car felt really good tonight. We made some adjustments for the feature. In the feature, the car was getting a hold of the track better.”

Kinser started second and quickly jumped to the lead as he charged down the front straightaway and led into the first turn with pole sitter Tim Shaffer and Terry McCarl behind.

Kinser opened a healthy lead over the first five laps of the 35-lap event and hit lapped traffic on the sixth circuit, giving Shaffer a chance to close in. Shaffer got bottled up in traffic and had to get on the brakes exiting the second turn, allowing Kinser to pull away again.

McCarl slipped into second and closed on Kinser, but contact between the leader and a lapped car, left McCarl with nowhere to go and he was forced to the work area.

Kinser endured four more cautions as well as a red flag period to earn his ninth A-Feature win of the season and the 542nd of his World of Outlaws career. Also, Shaffer made a late charge in traffic as the pair saw the white flag.

“It was a long night,” said the winner. “The track was rough and choppy. It smoothed out a little bit later in the night, but not a lot. We had a lot of yellows, which I guess was probably good. I had an open track most of the time that way. I was fast and the only way that I probably would have gotten past would have been in lapped traffic, which would have been easy tonight.”

Despite the cold temperatures and the number of interruptions in the 35-lap event, Kinser has no problem staying in a rhythm. After finishing second in the Crane Cams Dash, his crew made a number of changes to his car that were beneficial to him in the A-Feature.

“My car was handling good enough that I was able to pick it right back up pretty easily,” noted Kinser. “The car was a lot easier to drive than in the dash. I could run around the top and diamond it down back off to the middle.”

For Shaffer, it was his second consecutive runner-up finish and 25th Top-1o finish, as he continues to close in on his first win of the season. He won the Crane Cams Dash by a healthy margin to earn the pole position for the A-Feature.

“We were pretty awesome most of the night,” said Shaffer, driver of the Casey’s General Store Maxim. “We tried to make the car better for the feature and probably should have left it alone. We’ll take second. We were pretty good. We had a radiator cap come off with about 15 laps to go and that let a lot of water out of it. The yellow came out right at the right time. When you are running second, you want to see the yellows. We just couldn’t capitalize on them.”

Shaffer and his team learned a number of things that they can apply to the second night of the Oil City Cup in the World of Outlaws inaugural visit to Castrol Raceway. With warm weather expected again during the day and cooler temperatures at night, he knows he will have his hands full in his second race at the state-of-the-art facility.

“It was a tricky track for everybody, but my crew worked hard and we are happy,” he noted. “If we can get that car rolling around like we did tonight, we’ll be fine, but the track will be different tomorrow. That’s the thing about dirt track racing, it changes every night.”

Donny Schatz, the current World of Outlaws championship point leader made a late charge to finish third after starting 11th. He battled with Jason Meyers late in the race for the third position.

“We did what we had to, but we would have liked to have passed two more cars,” said Schatz, driver of the ParkerStore J&J. “We gave it everything we had, but it tough to do it when you don’t get traffic. We’re glad to be in the Top-three with how the track looked.”

Schatz, who was under the weather, endured very chilly conditions that saw the mercury drop below 50 degrees by the completion of the feature.

“I’m glad the night is over with and hopefully I can get rested up for tomorrow and try to get my wind back underneath me,” he said.

Joey Saldana lined up 13th for the A-Feature and steadily worked his way to the front. With the aid of a few cautions, he was able to stay close to the leaders to record his 46th Top-10 finish of the season as he continues to chase Schatz in the championship standings.

“It was a good night for us,” said Saldana, driver of the Open Joist JEI. “It was definitely a good run for a track that demanding. We just have to keep running strong and hanging around the front.”

Saldana was glad that the leaders did get into long runs in lapped traffic. He felt his car was best on restarts and that gave him ample opportunities to gain positions, as he used both the high and low side of the track.

“The restarts were good,” he said. “The track was so hard to pass on and narrow that if you had a good restart you could get around a guy. It seemed to benefit you. At the end, the track opened up a little better, but it was over.”

Jason Meyers finished fifth aboard the Primerica Financial Maxim. He had several battles over the course of the night as he ran in the Top-Five the entire distance.

Jeremy Campbell finished sixth, driving the RLM Financial Maxim. Craig Dollansky and his team changed engines a couple of times on the night as he finished seventh after starting 18th. Paul McMahan was eighth in the Bass Pro Shops Eagle, after beginning the night by setting a new track record in time trials, with KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award winner Jac Haudenschild in ninth in the Wright One Construction Maxim, and Danny Lasoski rounded out the Top-10 in the Roth Motorsports JEI, after starting 22nd.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Saturday night with the second night of the Oil City Cup from Castrol Raceway in Edmonton .

Stott Named Grand Marshall for Milwaukee Race

ARCA RE/MAX Series News

WEST ALLIS WI - Ramo Stott and Benny Parsons are two names synonymous with stock car auto racing. As former national driving champions, they are also well recognized within the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Both former champions will be honored on Sunday, August, 26th when the ARCA RE/MAX Series, now in its 55th consecutive year of competition, makes an appearance to the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis , Wisconsin for the Governor’s Cup 200 race weekend.

The fully-restored 1970 ARCA championship-winning Plymouth Superbird driven by Stott and the 1969 Ford Torino driven by Parsons in his 1969 championship season will be rolling at the head of the field as Governor’s Cup 200 competitors take their initial pace lap. The race, which marks the ARCA RE/MAX Series’ tenth appearance to the Milwaukee Mile since 1958, is scheduled to roll off at 12 p.m. Central on Sunday, August 26th LIVE on SPEED.

In 1998, Parsons was named one of the 50-greatest NASCAR drivers of all time, but the 1973 Cup Champion made his career in ARCA first, winning the 1965 ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie of the Year award followed by consecutive ARCA RE/MAX Series championships in 1968 and 1969. In all, Parsons won 16 ARCA national events at a wide range of tracks on pavement and dirt during the 1968 and 1969 seasons, including the 300-miler at Daytona Int’l Speedway on February 16, 1969. His career-first ARCA win came on March 22, 1968 at Pan-American Speedway in San Antonio, Texas, and his final ARCA win came at ARCA’s hometown track Toledo Speedway on August 2, 1969. Upon his retirement from driving in 1988, Parsons stepped into the TV booth as commentator/analyst for ESPN prior to his tenure at NBC and TNT. Parsons passed away in January of 2007 following complications with lung disease but his brother, former NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series driver Phil Parsons, is active in the series as an analyst during ARCA RE/MAX Series broadcasts on SPEED.

With two ARCA RE/MAX Series National Point Championships to his name, Keokuk , Iowa ’s Stott was certainly an accomplished racer during his career. In addition to the 1970 and 1971 series titles, Stott finished third in points in 1969 and is seventh on the all-time win list with 27 career ARCA victories and 16 pole awards. In addition, Stott has led 316 laps in seven superspeedway races. He is frequently found in the ARCA RE/MAX Series garage area as an advisor to the Stott-Classic Auto Racing Team, which is run and operated by his son Corrie. Stott has been named Grand Marshall of the Governor’s Cup 200 Race Weekend.

In addition to Parson’s Ford Torino and Stott’s Plymouth Superbird, more than 30 additional Superbirds, Daytonas and Ford Torino Talladegas will converge on the Mile, organized by the Daytona-Superbird Auto Club. A photo shoot and grandstand show car display are planned for Sunday morning, August 21st. More ‘winged car’ races were contested at The Milwaukee Mile than any other speedway from 1970 through 1972. The Milwaukee Mile, which began its first season of operation a full eight years before the first Indianapolis 500 in 1903 is the oldest, continually operating motor speedway in the world.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series, established in 1953, made its first appearance to The Milwaukee Mile in 1958, crowning Fred Lorenzen as the inaugural winner. The ARCA sanctioning body, which was at that time known as the Midwest Auto Racing Club (MARC), would return to The Milwaukee Mile four additional times between 1959 and 1960 to co-sanction events with USAC, awarding race victories to Tony Bettenhausen on two separate occasions, along with Rodger Ward and Fred Lorenzen. The series would take a hiatus from the famed facility until 1982, when Dean Roper claimed victory and in 1983 for an event won by Dave Weltmeyer. Frank Kimmel took a convincing win in the ARCA RE/MAX 150 in 2005 and Phil Bozell would earn his career first ARCA RE/MAX Series victory at The Milwaukee Mile the following year.

As part of this year’s Governor’s Cup 200 race weekend, former series competitors Stott, Sal Tovella, Bay Darnell and other drivers will be recognized in the ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers meeting and take part in pre-race festivities.

The Governor’s Cup 200 at The Milwaukee Mile marks the 17th of 23 events on the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. Drivers entered for the August 26th event include defending race winner Phil Bozell, along with Wisconsin natives Dexter Bean, Rick Tackman, Tom Berte and Tim Schendel. ARCA RE/MAX Series regulars, such as eight-time and defending champion Frank Kimmel, Michael McDowell, Justin Allgaier, Justin South, Phillip McGilton and Justin Marks are also entered. SCR
