WoO Signs Major Sponsor

DIRT Motorsports WoO Late Model Series News

CONCORD, NC - National Interstate Insurance Company (NIIC), a leading provider of transportation insurance products for specialty personal and commercial markets, has signed as a major sponsor of World of Outlaws dirt-track racing.

The Richfield, Ohio-based company will administer sponsorship programs with the World of Outlaws Late Models and Sprint Cars, highlighted by its title sponsorship of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Speedweek that visits three Ohio tracks and one Indiana oval from July 25-28.

“We’re honored that National Interstate Insurance Company has chosen to make its entry into the dirt-track racing industry by partnering with the World of Outlaws,” said Tim Christman, the director of the WoO LMS. “The company is planning an aggressive marketing program with the World of Outlaws to build awareness of its products.”

“This is a sponsorship program that will have great benefits for the teams, the series and the racetracks. National Interstate Insurance Company will be distributing thousands of dollars to the teams over the course of the season and will also help with the promotion of the series and the racetracks we visit.”

National Interstate Insurance’s association with the World of Outlaws began with the May 31 Late Model Series event at Delaware International Speedway, where the National Interstate Insurance Fast-Time Award and NIIC ‘Fast Claims Payout’ Hard Luck Award were presented for the first time. NIIC will distribute $100 to the fastest qualifier in time trials and $50 to the night’s hard-luck driver (as determined by WoO LMS officials) at all remaining WoO LMS events in 2007.

In addition, the driver who registers the most National Interstate Insurance Fast-Time Awards during the 2007 WoO LMS season will receive a $1,000 bonus at the tour’s awards banquet.

National Interstate Insurance Company will also serve as the ‘presenting sponsor’ of the ‘Brad Doty Classic’ for the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on July 11 at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, and the WoO LMS event on July 28 at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio.

The company’s highest profile sponsorship will be the National Interstate Insurance World of Outlaws Late Model Series Speedweek, an inaugural mini-tour that is scheduled to compete on Wed., July 25, at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park; Thurs., July 26, at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway; Fri., July 27, at Tony Stewart’s famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio; and Sat., July 28, at Dave Blaney’s Sharon Speedway in eastern Ohio.

“We’re proud to be an Ohio-based company, so becoming the title sponsor of a World of Outlaws Late Model Series Speedweek that visits three Ohio tracks is a perfect fit for us,” said John Hollar, Vice President of National Interstate Insurance Company. “It’s a great way for us to support the many great Ohio Late Model drivers as they compete against the world-class drivers from the World of Outlaws.”

In that vein, NIIC will post $1,000 in bonuses for Ohio-based drivers or teams that race in the WoO LMS Speedweek shows. The three highest-finishing Ohio-based drivers or teams in each event will receive bonuses of $500, $300 and $200, respectively, for their efforts.

An additional $1,000 bonus will be presented to the Ohio-based driver or team that finishes highest in the four-race Speedweek point standings.

“Getting involved with the World of Outlaws is an excellent opportunity for National Interstate Insurance,” said Hollar. “Dirt-track racing just continues to grow, and we want to be part of that growth.

“We looked at numerous motorsports marketing options and, in the end, decided that working with the World of Outlaws would be the best value for us. It’s a thrilling series with great drivers and passionate fans, and that’s what we want to be associated with.

“Being part of the sport allows us to get in touch with so many racers and fans at the grassroots level that have demographics that fit our products. This relationship will also allow us to provide additional benefits and value to our partner agents.”

NIIC is planning many interactive marketing initiatives at the racetrack, including autograph sessions with World of Outlaws drivers and displays to directly connect with potential customers. The company will also launch a dedicated website – www.nationalinterstateracing.com – that promotes the World of Outlaws races, offers ticket giveaways for fans and “tells the story of why we’re involved in the sport,” said Jason Sinkovitz, a sales manager at National Interstate Insurance Company.

According to Hollar, being part of the World of Outlaws scene will help NIIC reach out to participants and fans who might be interested in the company’s insurance programs for Recreational Vehicles, watercraft, and commercial vehicles for small business owners.

“We’re very excited about promoting our RV insurance,” said Hollar. “Partnering with the World of Outlaws enables us to talk directly to the thousands of RV’ers who enjoy dirt-track racing.”

ESPN Reaction to Jr. Move

Nextel Cup News

ESPN NASCAR analysts Rusty Wallace, the 1989 NASCAR Cup Series driving champion, and Tim Brewer, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion crew chief, on today’s announcement that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join the Hendrick Motorsports team:

Rusty Wallace: “I can’t think of anything at all that’s bigger. He hit a home run and hit it out of the ballpark. His father always loved Rick Hendrick and had a great admiration for him. With Junior finding that he can be in a car with points, he’s assured that he’s in all the races next year. You’ll never risk any problems whether it rains or you have a blown engine that can keep you out of a race. I think he could have done well at Richard Childress next season, but there was one problem – he wouldn’t have had points headed into the 2008 season.

“Rick Hendrick has amazing integrity and is a wonderful human being. Rick stepped in and helped me out to win my championship in 1989. He always jokes that he has six and a half championships because he funded half of Rusty’s team. His personal office is inside the race shop. Motorsports is his love.”

Tim Brewer: “I think it’s a great decision because he wants to go and win races and win championships. He’s going to make the change for himself, get in a good race car and he’ll get the job done. He’s been saying all along that he really wants to drive the No. 3 car at the end of his career so I think that’s the reason he didn’t go to Richard Childress yet. They are proven winners and proven champions at Hendrick. The combination he’s had hasn’t been working, and that’s no disrespect to anyone. If I were him I would show up, not even take my helmet, and just ask ‘which car do you want me to get in?’ If I’d implemented a change and gone this far, I believe I’d make a big change.” SCR

Shepherd to Pilot No. 39 in Limited ARCA Schedule

ARCA RE/MAX Series News

Concord, N.C. - Roulo Bros. Racing has announced that Roush Fenway Racing development driver Peter Shepherd will once again be behind the wheel of the No. 39 Ford Fusion for select ARCA RE/MAX Series events.  Shepherd will assume driving duties beginning at the ARCA 200 at Michigan International Speedway this Friday, June 15th.  The No. 39 will carry BeavEx Courier Services as the primary sponsor and Zardo Scrap Metal, Logels Auto Parts and Reliance Tool as associates.

"It's great to have Peter back in the car," said Gary Roulo, owner.  "He has a natural driving ability and he will be a great representative for team sponsors.  On the sponsor side, BeavEx has been a great marketing partner for us, participating as an associate sponsor for several previous events.  We are really excited to have them on as a primary

sponsor for the Michigan race."

"I'm excited to be back in a Roulo Bros. car this weekend," said Shepherd.  "We're happy to have BeavEx Courier Services as our primary sponsor this weekend.  We had a decent top 10 run at Michigan last year so we're hoping to top that this Friday for BeavEx Courier Services and our entire team.  The Roulo Bros. always provide me with winning equipment and Michigan is a great track with lots of room to pass so I'm really looking forward to having a good weekend."

Roulo added, "We have had a good record at M.I.S. through the years in both ARCA and NEXTEL Cup.  We had a good run last year with Pete and we were in a position to win two years ago with Erik Darnell until we ran short on fuel.  We really appreciate the relationship with Jack Roush and everyone in the Roush Fenway organization.  They have been great to work with.  It's also rewarding to know we're helping to groom some of the future stars for their race teams."

In 2006 Shepherd scored three top ten finishes in four starts for the Roulo Bros. in ARCA RE/MAX Series competition.  His best finish of fourth came at Gateway International Speedway.  In last year's ARCA RE/MAX Series visit to Michigan, Shepherd posted the fifth fastest qualifying lap at 39.404 seconds (182.732 mph) in the Roulo Bros./BeavEx entry, ultimately racing to a tenth place finish.

Qualifying for the ARCA 200 is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT on Thursday, June 14th. The ARCA 200 at Michigan International Speedway rolls off at 5:15 p.m. EDT Friday, June 15th.  The race will be carried on Speed Channel. SCR

Labonte to Drive No. 55 at Road Courses

Nextel Cup News

CORNELIUS, N.C. – Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) announced Tuesday that two-time NASCAR NEXTEL CUP Champion, Terry Labonte will step into the No. 55 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry for the road course races at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen International.

“It’s not an easy decision for me to remove myself from the car, but I know it is for the betterment of our whole program,” said Waltrip. “I know Terry’s experience and road race savvy will breathe a breath of fresh air into my young NAPA team.”

Labonte has had much success at road course tracks finishing third at Infineon Raceway last year and has six top-10 finishes at Watkins Glen International.

“To put Terry in the car is a reflection of the big picture we are trying to establish with this NAPA Racing team and I know this will be a spark this team needs,” Waltrip said. “I look forward to watching the NAPA team compete and learning more about all the MWR cars from a different perspective, exclusively as an owner.”

Waltrip’s sponsor, NAPA AUTO PARTS, supports his decision.

NAPA appreciates and respects Michael’s dedication to move our racing program forward and regain our on-track competitive edge,” said NAPA President Bob Susor. “We thank him for his efforts and dedication to NAPA and welcome the addition of NASCAR champion Terry Labonte to the NAPA family for these road-course events.”

Labonte Test for RCR in Montreal

Busch Series News

MONTREAL - History was made Tuesday when Terry Labonte tested with members of Richard Childress Racing’s (RCR) NASCAR Busch Series teams at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in preparation for the inaugural Canadian Busch Series race scheduled for Aug. 4 at the Montreal road course.

It was the first time a Busch Series race car has turned a lap on the 13-turn 2.709-mile circuit, which has been home to the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix since 1978. The 2007 edition of the race was held last weekend.

The two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion (1984, 1996) and four-time series road course race winner drove RCR’s No. 21 AutoZone Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. He made a total of 21 laps (57 miles) with a fast lap of 1:49:86 minutes at an average speed of 105.602 mph.

“The test went very well and it was an honor and quite a thrill to drive the first laps here in a NASCAR stock car,” said Labonte. “The biggest thing was figuring out the braking points that will be used for the race. We can’t get into the corners as deep as the Formula 1 cars. I think there will be at least two good places to pass so track position will be very important but it’s the same as Sonoma (Infineon Raceway) or some of the ovals that NASCAR races at.”

Labonte, retired from fulltime NASCAR competition, was chosen to be the test driver because he will not compete in the Canadian event. All the information collected from the test, including videotape taken of the course from laps in a street-legal sedan, will be shared with every Busch Series team that will participate in the event.

RCR did a similar test in January 2005 with driver Jeff Burton prior to the first Busch Series race at Autodromos Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City .

On hand from RCR were NBS team manager Will Lind, all three Busch Series crew chiefs (Dan Deeringhoff/No. 2 BB&T, Shane Wilson/No. 21 AutoZone, and Pat Smith/ No. 29 Holiday Inn), and crew members from all three teams. SCR

Saladana Wins Eagle Nationals

DIRT Motorsports WoO Sprint Series News

Twice this season, Joey Saldana and his Kasey Kahne Racing team have welcomed new crew members to their team, and twice they have won in the debut race for the new crew members.

On Saturday at Eagle Raceway in the Eagle Nationals, they welcomed Kolten Gouse and Jared Ridge to the team. Both recently graduated high school and will take to the road full-time with the team for the remainder of the World of Outlaws season. Saldana welcomed the pair in style on Saturday night, as they got to celebrate in Victory Lane, as he won his seventh A-Feature event of the season.

Saldana powered his way to the lead on the eighth lap of the Eagle Nationals, charging under Brooke Tatnell on the back straightaway, and then holding off a furious charge from Jac Haudenschild over the last 10 laps of the race.

“It was a great night tonight,” said Saldana, driver of the Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI. “The team worked great collectively to win this race. We know that we have a team that is capable of winning each time we get to the track. We’ll just keep building on this. We set up a strong foundation for this team last season and we continue to build and grow. This win is huge for Kasey Kahne Racing.”

The race began with polesitter Brooke Tatnell jumping to the early lead over Steve Kinser and Haudenschild. It was slowed on the fourth lap when an accident involving several cars that were running in the Top-10 got together. Daryn Pittman got the worst of it getting upside, ending his night. Also, Steve Kinser’s night was over after the incident. The rest of the cars involved including current series point leader Donny Schatz were able to continue after going to the work area,

Saldana lined up sixth for the 40-lap event and gained a couple of spots on the opening lap. He moved into the third spot on the fourth lap when the accident occurred. On the ensuing restart, the native of Brownsburg, Indiana dove under Haudenschild coming off the fourth turn to claim the runner-up spot. He would then shadow Tatnell for three laps before making the pass for the lead and ultimately the win.

A number of caution flags slowed the race, and forced the cars to run a number of laps under the yellow flag. This had many of the teams worried about fuel and also if their tires would hold up. The only thing that slightly worried Saldana was a lapped car in front of him that lost power late in the race, bringing out a caution right in front of him exiting the fourth turn.

“I think the crew was worried about fuels and tires, but I wasn’t,” explained the winner. “I knew we had a lot of fuel to begin the race and we had a little bit harder of a tire on. We were fast down low and we could pass down there. We tried a few new things with shocks tonight and they worked.”

Haudenschild thrilled the crowd with his trademark aggressive driving style, as he tapped the wall several times as the laps wound down. He had a very entertaining battle with 2001 World of Outlaws Champion Danny Lasoski in the middle portion of the race. Haudenschild rode inches off the wall, while Lasoski was stuck to the bottom of the track. The pair traded the runner-up position a number of times. Late in the race, Haudenschild also battled with Tatnell for the second spot, as he continued to hug the wall.

“The car was pretty good tonight, and the crew did a good job,” said Haudenschild, driver of the Wright One Construction Maxim. “We got close to Joey (Saldana) at the end and just came up a little bit short. We gave it everything we had.”

The native of Wooster, Ohio made up ground in traffic as he chased Saldana, but each time he would close in on the leader, the yellow flag flew, sending all the lapped machines to the rear of the field. On the restarts in open track Saldana quickly jumped to a sizeable lead, leaving Haudenschild looking for traffic to close the gap.

“We didn’t need the yellows at the end,” said the runner-up. “We were very good in lapped traffic and that is where we made up ground running up top. If we would have gotten in traffic with 10 or 15 laps to go, we would have had a few more chances.”

Before the World of Outlaws heat races took to the high-banked 1/3-mile, the track crew along with officials from SLS Promotions reworked the track, which drew rave reviews from the drivers at the end of the night.

“The track was very racy tonight,” said Haudenschild, while signing autographs for a throng of fans in the pit area. “It helped when they worked on the track. We ran both the top and bottom.”

Tatnell matched his season-best finish as he was third in the Eagle Nationals, to earn his third straight Top-three finish at the track. After winning his first Crane Cams Dash of the season, he earned his first pole position and led his first laps of the 2007 campaign in A-Feature competition.

“It’s a happy/sad day,” said Tatnell, driver of the Volcano Joe’s Coffee Schnee. “It’s the best we have consistently been all year long, but it’s disappointing to lead and not win.”

After enduring some bad luck the last couple of weeks, the strong run lifted the team’s spirit as they continue to close in on their first win of the season. Early in the race, he pulled away before a caution negated the lead he built up, and putting Saldana and Haudenschild right on his tail tank.

“We found a few things during the week and those helped us,” said the native of San Souci, NSW, Australia. “I was searching the track for the rubber. It was good to lead laps and run up front.”

The always optimistic driver has always enjoyed racing at Eagle, and admits that even when things aren’t going great, he can usually turn things around at Eagle.

“It’s good bullring racing here, like what I grew up doing,” explained the multi-time champion in Australia. “You have to get your elbows up and manhandle the car. We’ve always had good results here, no matter what car I have been in. It’s a good confidence boost for the team.”

Danny Lasoski finished fourth in the Roth Motorsports Eagle to vault into the third spot in the championship point standings. The native of Dover, Missouri lined up 12th for the 40-lap event, and steadily worked his way to the front. He gained two spots on the opening lap, and was a benefactor of the lap-4 red flag, moving from 10th to fifth. From there, he worked on Jason Sides for the fourth spot, and then got around Haudenschild for second, before battling Tatnell late in the race for the third spot.

Jason Meyers lined up 16th in the Eagle Nationals, and also had a very consistent night aboard the Primerica Financial Maxim. He gained a couple spots on the opening lap and also was a benefactor of the lap-4 incident, gaining five positions. He worked his way into fifth on the 28th-lap. It was his 13th Top-Five finish of the season and it moved up into the fifth spot in points.

Chad Kemenah earned his sixth Top-10 finish of the season, as he was sixth in the Hampshire Racing Engines Maxim. Kerry Madsen earned the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award after starting 23rd and finishing seventh in the Selma Shell Maxim. Paul McMahan was eighth in the Bass Pro Shops Eagle. Tim Shaffer was ninth in the Casey’s General Stores Maxim.

Current World of Outlaws championship point leader Donny Schatz finished 10th in the Snap-on Tools J&J after getting caught up in the lap 4 accident and having to go to the work area and restart at the read of the field. It was his 27th Top-10 finish in 30 events.

The night began with Saldana turning the quickest lap in time trials for the sixth time this season. He also added to the number of laps that he has led on the season, crossing the 200-lap marker which is best in the series. In addition to this, he took over the lead in money earned after picking up $10,000 for his seventh A-Feature triumph of the season.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Thursday, June 14 at the recently reconfigured Tri-City Speedway in Illinois, for an event that postponed by weather in April.

Rain Out: Gordon Wins
