Ford Re-Signs RYR

Nextel Cup News

DEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Racing Technology announced today that it has re-signed Robert Yates Racing to a contract that will keep the family-owned team sporting the blue oval for at least the next five years.

“Robert Yates Racing is synonymous with Ford,” said Dan Davis, director, Ford Racing Technology.  “We’ve celebrated the joy of winning races and championships with them, in addition to feeling the frustration that this sport can dish out.  The main thing is that we’ve gone through all of those times together as loyal partners.  We’re thrilled to have this deal behind us and now we can look forward to continuing getting Robert and his team back among the NASCAR elite.”

The agreement continues a 19-year relationship that began when Yates became a car owner in 1988.  Since then, his teams have won 57 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races, including the Daytona 500 three times, and one series championship in 1999.

“I’ve always been very passionate about Ford, more than ever now, because I want us to run good on Sunday and help them sell a whole bunch of Fords on Monday.  I just want to be part of that,” said Robert Yates.  “For Ford to come up and support us when we’re not having our best days is really a great feeling.  They’re not turning their back on us.

They’re offering us plenty of help to get this deal turned around, certainly with engineering support, so we appreciate everybody at Ford, everybody that works on them and everybody that buys them.  I’m very appreciative of having this deal.”

Robert Yates Racing currently fields two cars in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series with drivers David Gilliland in the No. 38 M&M’s Ford Fusion and Ricky Rudd in the No. 88 Snickers Ford Fusion.  Stephen Leicht pilots the organization’s lone NASCAR Busch Series entry, the No. 90 Citifinancial Ford Fusion.

“We’re talking to sponsors and they want to know what product and what kind of support we get from our manufacturer, so this is huge.  This deal is important because it plays a big role in what you’re doing to improve your operation,” said Robert Yates.  “We’re happy about this being done because there was speculation out there that we didn’t have anything or that we were looking elsewhere.  It wasn’t true, but it’s hard to quiet your critics, especially when your competition is trying to shoot you down, so I want to thank Ford for being loyal to us.” SCR

AT&T Suit Could Have Alltel Rethinking its Activation Plans

Nextel Cup News - Source: Scene Daily

The court ruling that allowed AT&T to rebrand the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet has Alltel thinking about challenging the restrictions placed on its NASCAR team sponsorship.

Until now, Alltel has abided by a set of rules that aren't specifically written into its deal with Penske Racing, and many of those rules restrict Alltel from activating its deal the way other sponsors do.

Because it is a wireless company that competes directly against Sprint Nextel, which spends close to $100 million a year to be NASCAR's top series sponsor, Alltel can't set up interactive displays, it can't title sponsor a race, it can't do any more than put its mark on driver Ryan Newman, the car, the pit crew and a single merchandise trailer.

And like Cingular, Alltel has always been told that it can't change its name if ever acquired by another company. But these prohibitions could be subject to debate after a judge's ruling on May 18 that allowed Cingular's No. 31 car to carry AT&T sponsorship. Sprint Nextel has said that the ruling diminishes its exclusivity in the sport.

U.S. District Court Judge Marvin Shoob granted AT&T a temporary injunction to put its blue globe on the No. 31 car because, in part, NASCAR's restrictions weren't specifically outlined in Cingular's team contract with Richard Childress Racing.

Alltel's restrictions are likewise vaguely referenced in its contract with Penske, said Samira Zebian, Alltel's director of sponsorship marketing.

"Could this allow us to leverage the race track and other platforms that have been off-limits to us?" Zebian asked. "What has been conjecture in the past now must be formalized. We've always been very respectful of Nextel's rights, but we need a better understanding of how far-reaching those rights are.

"What the suit brings to light is that a league deal shouldn't impact our category so negatively that we can't put our product in front of the fans the way every other team sponsor can."

Alltel has no plans to challenge NASCAR legally, Zebian said, but "it does force a conversation" about Alltel's activation rights.

"It's a learning situation because you can never predict everything that may happen," said Ron Schneider, president of Sport Dimensions, which has represented Shell, Best Western and others. "I doubt Nextel or anyone else would have predicted that Cingular, the industry leader, would go away. It's going to lead to strong clauses being written into these contracts to address that."

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the case could prompt NASCAR to review the way its team contracts are written. The governing body has purposely kept the wording in the contracts as neutral as possible to maintain flexibility with the teams and sponsors, he said, but that flexibility could be lost in future contracts. NASCAR likely will be much more specific in its wording on any sponsor restrictions.

"We've usually found ways to make things work and our model has been considered pretty sponsor-friendly, but now our hand might be forced to get rid of some of those gray areas," Poston said.

Once the AT&T trial concludes, though, the issue still might not be settled. Alltel was recently acquired by TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners and while the name is expected to remain the same, some analysts believe Alltel remains a target for one of the larger wireless companies.

Kinser Takes Special Memorial Day Win

DIRT Motorsports WoO Sprint Series News

Elbridge, NY - Steve Kinser has had countless hard fought victories over his career, and he added another one to that list on Monday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park, as he won the World of Outlaws event on Memorial Day.

The 20-time series champion was engaged in a mid-race battle with Craig Dollansky, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, and Joey Saldana. The five drivers were so close that a blanket could have been thrown over them all. They jockeyed for position lap after lap and ultimately the win, over a span of six laps while they weaved their way through lapped traffic. Kinser came out on top to of this battle to earn his fifth A-Feature win of the season and ninth career triumph at Rolling Wheels.

Joey Saldana made a late charge to finish second, with current series point leader Donny Schatz third, Craig Dollansky fourth, and Daryn Pittman fifth.

“That was a fun race,” said Kinser, driver of the Q Oil Maxim. “We had four or five of us going at it in lapped traffic. When you have a race like that and you come out on top, it is always a lot of fun.”

Craig Dollansky led from the drop of the green flag until the 16th lap when Kinser used the low side of the track on the back straightaway to take the lead, with Pittman, Schatz, and Saldana all in toe. While Kinser was leading, the second position traded hands a number of times but at the line it was Dollansky holding that spot for the 16th and 17th laps, before Saldana took the position.

Kinser quickly began to pull away after taking the lead, before a caution with four laps to go, bunched the field up. Saldana made a couple of runs at Kinser on the restart, drawing even coming off the second turn each lap, but Kinser charged down the back straightaway to retain the lead and pulled away by over a second as he crossed under the checkered flags.

“I got better as I got more heat in the tires,” explained the winner. “I didn’t really need that last yellow. I had the car working good and there weren’t really any lapped cars in front of me. A lot of times the yellows will seal a tire over and you can’t take off well. I was doing a lot of (tire) spinning down the backstretch and I was worried that Joey (Saldana) or somebody may get a run on me in (turns) three and four. Once I got a full lap and a half in, I felt pretty comfortable.”

After some bad luck befell him on Friday in the Eckerd Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Saldana was thrilled with his runner-up finish. While he wanted to be in victory lane, he was glad to earn his 16th Top-Five finish of the season as he continues to hold down the second position in the championship standings.

“We had a good run,” said Saldana, driver of the Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI. “Ricky (Warner) and Justin (Adams) have been working very hard. We wrecked a car at Charlotte the other day and they had to get a car built and then drive all the way up here. It was a good effort by the team. To stand on the front straightaway with the quality of cars that are here and the two guys we were racing was quite an accomplishment.”

Donny Schatz who battled with Kinser early in the race for the third spot, moved into the second position on the 11th lap, before falling back to fourth and then fifth before battling his way back into the Top-three. He staged an entertaining battle with Dollansky and Pittman late. His third-place finish was his series-best 18th Top-Five finish of the season as he chases his second straight World of Outlaws title.

“We had a race to stay in third at the end,” said Schatz, driver of the ParkerStore J&J. “We weren’t as good as we wanted to be. We tried some stuff, and that wasn’t the worst thing in the world. There were two cars better than us. We had to race hard at the end as the (No.) 7 and (No.) 21 were trying to keep us back there. “

In just his second race with Mike Woodring on board as crew chief, Dollansky led the first half of the feature and finished in the fourth position. He used a very strong start to power his way down the front straigthaway from the outside front row starting spot. For the native of Elk River, Minnesota, it was his ninth Top-Five finish of 2007.

“We made a few changes with this race car and this race team,” said Dollansky, driver of the Karavan Trailers Maxim. “We have Mike (Woodring) here and he did a really good job tonight. We had a good car. We went out late to qualify and turned in a good lap. We also had a good car in the heat race and dash.”

With the World of Outlaws first Eastern Swing of the season in the books, Kinser is pleased with how his team is performing. He wrapped up the seven race stretch with five Top-Five finishes, including wins at Lernerville Speedway and New Egypt Speedway, as he moved into the fifth spot in points in the process.

“I’m happy with how we have been running,” he said. “We have been good trough most of the swing, other than when we had a little hiccup with a motor problem at Grandview. We’ve been running in the Top-Five everywhere we have gone and that is what we need to do.”

Saldana lined up fifth for the A-Feature and fell back a spot on the opening lap before taking it back from Jason Solwold. He moved into third on the 17th lap when he got around Pittman. He followed that up the next lap by getting around Dollansky.

“At the beginning of the race, I didn’t really have a good feel for my car,” explained Saldana. “When I finally figured it out we starting rolling around there and picking off cars. I wish Steve (Kinser) hadn’t got to the front when he did, because there were four or five of us right there, and that was the only shot to win the race. We battled hard and passed some really good cars.”

Schatz tried everything he could on the final restart, as he lined up third behind Kinser and Saldana, as he looked to add to his series-best seven A-Feature wins on the season. During the Eastern swing, the native of Fargo, North Dakota won three races, and finished in the Top-Five in five of the seven events.

“Steve is the best on the restarts and he is not going to make any mistakes,” said Schatz. “I tried to glaze about the top, but I sealed a tire up.”

After enduring some back luck during the Eastern swing, Dollansky was pleased to finish up the grueling stretch of races on a very positive note. He has won at two of the next three tracks on the World of Outlaws schedule, as the series heads back to the Midwest.

“All in all, with some of the luck we have had lately, I am encouraged at what I saw,” said Dollansky. “I’m looking forward to working with Mike and getting going. It is very encouraging. We’ll just keep working at it.”

Pittman started on the pole in the A-Feature and ran in the Top-Five all night in the Titan Garages Maxim, as he finished fifth. It was the eighth Top-Five finish of the season for the native of Owasso, Oklahoma.

Jason Solwold finished sixth in the City Wide Insulation Maxim. Jason Meyers was seventh in the Primerica Financial Maxim, earning the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award after starting 13th. Danny Lasoski was eighth in the Roth Motorsports Eagle. Paul McMahan was ninth in the Bass Pro Shops Eagle. Jason Sides rounded out the Top-10 in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, June 1 at Sharon Speedway in Ohio, followed by the second event of the season at Eldora Speedway on Saturday, June 2.

Goodyear Officials Say Tires Performed as Expected

Nextel Cup News - Source: Scene Daily

While several drivers complained about the hard tire that Goodyear brought to Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, the manufacturer said that the performance of the tire in the race was in line with expectations.

Sunday night's race showcased an unusual number of cut tires, an official said, as well as a heat problem causing Greg Biffle's tire to fail.

Several drivers complained about various aspects of the tire, raising concerns varying from inconsistency from set to set with the tires to complaining about the hard compound that made it tough to get any grip on the track.

Goodyear brought a harder left-side tire than drivers saw at the track in the fall to make sure that the tires held up on the track that was repaved prior to the 2006 season. While drivers understood the safety concession, that didn't stop the comments.

Goodyear officials, though, maintained that the race played out as expected.

"Tire performance was exactly what we expected from a wear and temperature perspective," Greg Stucker, director of race tire sales said. "In fact, Kurt Busch ran the first 140 laps of the race on a single set of tires. There were an unusually high number of cut tires during the Cup race -- we counted seven. In addition, several tires were damaged by contact and we had one melted bead as a result of excessive brake heat on the No. 16 [of Biffle]."

After his tire failure led to a crash, though, Biffle was one of the most outspoken about the tires.

"I hate to talk bad about anybody or bash anybody, but I just have to tell you that I think we've got the worst tires in racing - period," he said. "Nobody can drive these things. They're so hard. Nobody can race side by side.

"It just doesn't put on a good race."
