Helton Says France is Recovering

Helton said Friday that former NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr. continues to recover from a recent illness. Helton joked that the 73-year-old France hasn't lost his desire to be the boss. "He's resting comfortably," Helton said. "He's giving orders, and everybody is responding accordingly."

Jeff Burton followed up his win last week at Las Vegas by winning the Nicorette 300 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). Burton’s Richard Childress Racing (RCR) teammate Kevin Harvick finished second followed by the car that was the class of the field most of the day Kyle Busch. Carl Edwards and Casey Mears rounded out the top five. The win was the 24th Busch Series win for Burton and his 264th career start. SCR

Skinner Bumps and Runs to Win

Mike Skinner bumped Clint Bowyer out of his way on a late restart on the way to his second win in as many races Friday night at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). Bowyer who faded to fifth after the bump from Skinner was also passed by Todd Bodine who finished second followed by Matt Crafton in third. Rick Crawford finished fourth in his 250th career truck start and Bowyer rounded out the top five. The race set a new record for cautions with nine breaking the old record set lat year of seven.

 

With the win Skinner took over the points lead by 69. Bodine now its second followed by Ron Hornaday in third. SCR

Newman Ties AMS Pole Record

Ryan Newman tied Buddy Baker’s record for most career poles Friday night at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). Newman won his seventh career pole at AMS by winning the pole for the Kobalt Tools 500 with a speed of 193.124 mph. The speed was good enough to edge out Elliott Sadler who will roll off second Sunday. Sadler will be followed by Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon. SCR
