Matt Kenseth held off a hard charging Casey Mears to win the Stater Bros. 300 at the California Speedway. Mears who made his Hendrick Motorsports debut in the Busch Series finished second followed by his teammate Kyle Busch in third. Rounding out the top five were Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle.

The start was the 200th of Kenseth’s Busch Series career and his 22^nd career win.

There were a total of eight cautions during the race tying the race record. SCR

Mike Skinner took the lead before the caution flag flew on a late restart when Ron Hornaday who was running second got into the back of Mark Martin sending Martin for a spin through the infield.

Martin who finished 23^rd was bringing the field back to the green after a late caution for a David Starr wreck when Hornaday got into the back of him. After Martin went spinning and before the caution flew Skinner who was running third took the lead as the caution came out and then won it when the race was restarted. Hornaday finished second and last weeks winner Jack Sprague wound up third. Finishing fourth was Carl Edwards and Ted Musgrave rounded out the top five. SCR
