Meyers Wins in Australia

DIRT Motorsports WoO Sprint Series News

Concord, NC - Since Jason Meyers arrived in Australia, to compete at Parramatta City Raceway (PCR) he has not finished outside of the Top-eight, despite battling illness for the first two races. Also in that time, he has improved on his previous finish in each of the four contests.

In his first event he finished eighth, followed up by a fourth-place effort in the $50,000 to-win Classic last weekend. The native of Clovis, California, was the runner-up this past Wednesday night, and on Saturday night earned his first win at PCR with another star studded field on hand.

Meyers, who will contend for the World of Outlaws title this season, battled with reigning World of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz and Kerry Madsen for the win, as they all continue to tune up for the Outlaws Down Under IV set for next weekend at PCR.

Meyers, who has 14 career World of Outlaws A-Feature victories, started on the outside of the front row and shot around polesitter Adrian Maher for the lead on the second lap of the 30-lap event.

Schatz, a native of Fargo, North Dakota, who has won five races at PCR over the last three weeks, including last weekend’s $50,000 Bevelite Glass Sprintcar International, started fourth on Saturday night and quickly worked his way into the runner-up spot as he shadowed Meyers.

Meyers continued to lead as the pair entered lapped traffic. A couple of cautions cleared the track, with Kerry Madsen entering the mix for the lead as well. Meyers began to pull away after a mid-race restart, but again heavy lapped traffic allowed Schatz and Madsen to close in.

When the checkered was waved, it was Meyers, taking the win. Madsen slipped around Schatz to earn the runner-up position. Just behind the trio was 20-time World of Outlaws Champion Steve Kinser in fourth.

Chad Hillier, who will be a contender for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award with the World of Outlaws this season, came home 12th, to record his best finish at PCR.

Joey Saldana, who won at PCR on Wednesday driving for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne, saw his night come to an end on the eighth lap as he suffered rear end damage to his machine.

Schatz turned the second fastest lap in time trials of the 66 cars that clocked in, with Kinser seventh, Saldana 11, Meyers 15th, and Hillier 18th.

In preliminary action, Hillier turned in an impressive run in the second heat, taking the win, with Meyers third, Schatz fourth, and Kinser fifth, while Saldana finished second in the third heat.

Meyers won the second dash over Schatz, with Kinser fourth and Saldana seventh. Hillier came home seventh in the first dash.

Meyers, Schatz, Kinser, Hillier, and Saldana will be in action next at Parramatta City Raceway on January 18-20 as part of the Outlaws Down Under IV program. They will be joined by fellow World of Outlaws drivers: Becca Anderson, Tim Kaeding, Danny Lasoski, Jason Sides, Jason Soldwold, and Sammy Swindell. SCR

Tatnell Wins $20,000 in Australia

DIRT Motorsports WoO Sprint Series News

Concord, NC - Brooke Tatnell was more determined than ever to return to Victory Lane on Saturday night, after bad luck befell him on Friday in the first night of the two-day World Series Sprintcars (WSS) season finale.

After winning in his first race back on Australian soil on Wednesday at Brisbane International Speedway (BIS), Tatnell suffered a flat tire while leading at BIS on Friday night. He was back in action on Saturday and handily claimed the $20,000 winner’s check with a stout field of cars in attendance.

The triumph was the fourth of the 2006/2007 WSS season, for the five-time champion, who hails from San Souci, New South Wales. He won the first two rounds of the season, before returning to the United States to be with his wife Amy for the birth of their daughter Emma and to celebrate the Holiday’s, after claiming four A-Feature wins in World of Outlaws competition in 2006.

Though Tatnell, who finished sixth in World of Outlaws points last season, suffered the flat tire on Friday night, he was the leading point earner on the preliminary night and put himself in a good position for the $20,000 finale. He started on the pole of the first dash and picked up the win to earn the pole position in the 50-lap Feature.

Tatnell driving the Krikke Motorsports / Toyota Genuine Parts #1 Cool battled with Robbie Farr for the lead in the early going. He made his final pass of the night for the lead and ultimately the win on the 11th circuit. The fan favorite and always affable drive took the win, over fellow World of Outlaws driver Paul McMahan.

McMahan, made a late pass to secure the runner-up spot, driving for Titan Racing in the Titan Garages sponsored event. American drivers claimed five of the top-six spots in the final running order. Jason Johnson was fourth, with 2005 World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner Shane Stewart fifth, and Bud Kaeding was sixth, also driving for Titan Racing. SCR

Settlement Reached in Turner Suit Against Hendrick

Nextel Cup News - Source Scene Daily

Attorneys for Linda Turner have informed U.S. District Court in North Carolina that she has reached a settlement in her wrongful death lawsuit against Hendrick Motorsports and its pilots stemming from the death of her husband, team general manager Jeff Turner, in the Oct 24, 2004, accident that killed 10 people on the way to the race in Martinsville, Va.

The terms of the settlement are confidential, and the court still must approve the settlement. The settlement provides for an equal distribution of settlement proceeds among Linda and her three children, according to a filing with the court.

Turner also has sued the U.S. government over the actions of the air-traffic controllers. That suit is still pending, as are two other suits from widows Dianne Dorton and Tracy Lathram against Hendrick Motorsports.

In those cases (as well as the Turner case), Hendrick Motorsports has filed a third-party claim against the U.S. government and the actions of the air-traffic controllers.

The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that pilot error was the primary cause of the accident.
